5kVA vs 10kVA Solar Inverter: Which Do You Actually Need?

The correct inverter is determined by the loads that must operate simultaneously, their starting requirements and the architecture of the complete solar system.

Do not choose by house size alone

Two houses of the same physical size may have completely different electrical loads. One may require lighting, refrigeration and electronics while another may also include pumps, electric cooking, air conditioning and other heavy equipment.

Peak power matters

The inverter must support the maximum expected simultaneous load. Motors and compressors can also require substantially more power during startup than during normal operation.

This is why a load schedule is more useful than simply asking for a 5kVA or 10kVA package.

Battery and panels still need separate sizing

Moving from a 5kVA inverter to a 10kVA inverter does not automatically double backup duration or solar generation. Battery capacity and photovoltaic capacity must still be selected around energy requirements.
